Plantar Fasciitis: Work from home can cause Heel Pain

How Working from home can cause Heel Pain.

Have you noticed any persistent pain in your foot or feet since working from home? Especially in the heel area?

Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or when you stand up after sitting.

Why do you have this pain?
There are two reasons people may start to experience this whilst still working from home:

1) Because they are walking barefoot at home. In hot, humid Singapore and with the tradition of not wearing footwear around the house, most of us are barefoot at home. Walking barefoot on hard surfaces may place increased pressure on the arch of the foot and lead it to collapse which can lead to a tremendous amount of stress not only to the foot but to the rest of the body.

2) Because they are doing at-home workouts in inappropriate footwear. Whether they are creating their at-home workout, doing barefoot exercises while working out to their gym’s Instagram videos or going just a little too hard on the weekends, it’s important to mimic the routine you normally had pre-quarantine AND wear the appropriate foot wear. Barefoot exercises are as bad if not worse than walking barefoot as you’re putting more strain on your plantar fascia.

Treatment
Things that your osteopath can do to treat plantar fasciitis are:

Provide you with appropriate manual treatment to address the tightness of your calf and mobilize the foot and ankle as well as using Dry Needling to target more directly the area of pain.
